This year, CAG’s International Workers Memorial Day event was dedicated to the memory of the late Bob Dickie and Hope Roberston, who served CAG for decades as Chair and Secretary.
The event was held at the International Asbestos Memorial on the 27th of April. Speakers on the day were: CAG Chair Theresa Jones, Provost Douglas McAllister, retired industrial disease solicitor Fraser Simpson, Clinical Lead of the Scottish Cancer Network Dr Noelle O’Rourke, International Asbestos Memorial designer Jephson Robb, Marie McNair MSP, Martin Docherty-Hughes MP and Tony Worthington, former MP for Clydebank and Milngavie.
Speakers paid tribute to those killed, injured or made ill through their work, including those affected by asbestos-related disease. A minute’s silence was held to honour those who have died as a result of asbestos exposure.
It was noted by all that Bob and Hope had dedicated their retirements to campaigning for justice for asbestos victims. They both fought to ensure that victims of asbestos would never be forgotten and therefore embodied the motto of IWMD:
“remember the dead and fight for the living.”
